Nothing is quite as comforting and welcoming as coming into a warm, cosy room with a fire burning in the hearth. With Burley wood burning stoves, this ambiance can be achieved. Safety and cleanliness are easily achieved with these units. Only timber products should be used in these fires. They should not be used to burn coke or coal. Nor should they be used to burn painted timber or rubbish.

Installation instructions must be followed exactly. These are very heavy appliances. The minimum recommended depth for the hearth is 12mm or about half an inch but thicker is better. An accessory for the appliance is an extended base which is useful for free-standing units. Such a base provides somewhere to store firewood.

The hearth must be non-combustible. If the hearth is made of sectional slabs, expansion due to heat should not cause cracking and breakages. Replacement in such an event will be easier. It is important that the base be level. Marble and conglomerates are not recommended as suitable bases.

Stoves fitted against an outside wall will be fitted out to draw air straight from the outside. In other instances, the room will need to be fitted with an air vent. If the stove is fitted near combustible areas such as a stud wall, minimum distances for installing are suggested in the manufacturer’s instructions.

To prevent the chimney clogging with tar and thus working less efficiently, the fire should be allowed to burn quite strongly for half an hour or so. It can then be turned down. Dry firewood only should be burnt. It is recommended that a small amount of ash be left in the combustion chamber.

These types of stoves are very effective. There are a number of recommendations regarding the safe use of Burley wood burning stoves. The most important is to ensure that all air vents remain open. Flammable materials must be kept away from the appliance. The door to the unit must be kept closed once lit apart from when more fuel is added. It is best to add small amounts often. Guards should be used to ensure children and pets do not get too close.
